Iranian Urea 46% for Türkiye: A Buyer’s Sourcing Guide

Published August 16, 2026

A practical guide to Iranian urea 46% for Türkiye, covering market demand, product checks, delivery routes, Incoterms and buyer due diligence.

Türkiye buys a great deal of urea. That is the simplest place to start. World Integrated Trade Solution data, based on UN Comtrade records, shows imports worth USD 886.9 million under HS 310210 in 2024. Iran supplied 8.77 million kilograms of that volume. The route is established, although Iran still accounts for a relatively small share of Türkiye’s total urea imports.

So why consider Iranian urea 46%? Proximity helps, Iran has a large production base, and cargo can potentially move by road, rail or sea. Still, origin alone is never a buying case. Quality, payment, compliance and the final delivered cost must all work together.

What makes Iranian urea worth considering

Iranian producers benefit from natural-gas feedstock and an established petrochemical industry. For Turkish importers and distributors, that can create a competitive option when the producer, loading window, packaging and route line up.

Regional proximity can shorten transit, but it is not a guarantee of the lowest price or fastest delivery. A truck queue at the border, a tight vessel position, port handling or payment terms can quickly change the calculation. Buyers should compare the complete landed result.

Start with the product, not the price

Before discussing price, define the product. Is granular or prilled material required? What are the limits for nitrogen, biuret, moisture and particle size? What will the buyer use it for? The agreed sales specification should control the transaction, not a broad description such as “urea 46%.”

Ask for a recent certificate of analysis, producer and origin documents, packing details, any required safety information and a clear inspection plan. An agreed independent inspector can confirm quantity and quality and help prevent an argument after loading or discharge.

A clear specification and independent inspection are more valuable than a vague promise of premium quality.

Choosing a workable delivery route

Mersin, İskenderun, İzmir and İstanbul are possible delivery points. Inland destinations may also work when a compliant road or multimodal route is available. The practical choice depends on shipment size, terminal acceptance, vessel or truck capacity, customs requirements and the selected origin.

There is no single best transport mode. Bulk vessels suit some volumes, while breakbulk, containers, big bags or trucks suit others. A low freight quote can become expensive if the destination cannot discharge or store the cargo efficiently, or if demurrage begins to build.

Shipment size, packing and destination determine whether road, container or bulk delivery makes commercial sense.

EXW, FCA and CIP: choose the term carefully

EXW leaves most transport and export handling to the buyer, so it can be a poor fit when the buyer cannot manage origin formalities. With FCA, the seller delivers to the buyer’s nominated carrier at the named place and completes export clearance. That often works better for trucks, containers and multimodal movements.

CIP is often misunderstood. The seller pays carriage and insurance to the named destination, but risk normally transfers when the goods reach the first carrier, not when they arrive. Both places should be written precisely in the contract. For traditional bulk sea shipments, FOB, CFR or CIF may be more suitable.

Do the compliance work before committing

Iran-related trade can involve sanctions, banking, insurance and counterparty restrictions. A product may be permitted while a particular bank, carrier, insurer, payment route or counterparty is not. Screen the whole transaction before signing or moving funds.

Turkish importers should also confirm customs classification, taxes, documentation, agricultural or chemical rules and any registration obligations with qualified local advisers. The contract should clearly cover inspection, claims, force majeure, sanctions, payment, title and dispute resolution.
